A good road transport system is one of the best indicators of the economic and industrial development of a country and its growth. Today, road transport is by far the most prevalent mode of transport, because of its flexibility, accessibility to remote areas and adaptability to changes for achieving the desired objective of connectivity.

Paved surfaces for roadways, both Portland cement concrete and asphalt, must withstand very harsh conditions. Wheel loads from moving vehicles cause strains, stresses and deflections in the paved surface and underlying roadbed. Additionally, the pavement must endure environmental effects. Climatic changes cause temperature variations through the depth of the pavement, inducing internal stresses.

According to this standard, high performance hot mix asphalt concrete is composed of aggregates, bitumen and polypropylene fibers.

The Marshall tests and repeated load indirect tensile tests have shown that the addition of polypropylene fibers considerably alters the behavior of asphalt concrete. When the polypropylene fiber content increases, an increase in the Marshall stability index has been observed reaching 58% for the specimens reinforced with 1% of polypropylene fibers. According to the test results, the addition of 1% of polypropylene fibers prolongs the fatigue life by 27%.And  the addition of polypropylene fibers provides a positive contribution to the performance of asphalt pavements.
